Police Warn Marketplace Users

Queensland police are urging residents to take extra precautions when buying or selling high-value items through online marketplaces after identifying several alleged stealing and robbery offences in South Brisbane between January and June 2026.

Police said victims were allegedly targeted after arranging transactions involving items including mobile phones and laptops. In some cases, offenders reportedly used newly created or sparsely populated profiles to arrange meetings in secluded areas, often at night, before taking the goods or money.

Authorities advised marketplace users to check profiles carefully, meet in busy public places during daylight hours, bring a friend or family member, and retain transaction details such as names, phone numbers and vehicle registrations where possible. Buyers and sellers were also warned to use secure payment methods, verify funds directly through their accounts and avoid relying on payment screenshots.

Police said people should cancel a transaction if they feel uncomfortable and never agree to meet at an isolated or unfamiliar location. Suspected scams or cybercrime should be reported to the relevant financial institution and Cyber.gov.au.
