NASA is joining the Genesis Mission, a federal initiative aimed at using artificial intelligence to accelerate scientific and engineering breakthroughs, the agency announced July 22. The effort is led by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and includes more than 15 federal agencies. NASA said it will contribute mission expertise, research capabilities and data to help develop AI tools for national science and technology priorities. The agency introduced challenges focused on maintaining U.S. leadership in space and using its decades of scientific and engineering work to drive innovation. The initiative will explore AI applications for spacecraft, communications, logistics and surface operations. NASA said collaboration with the Department of Energy on computing and AI capabilities could help shorten the time needed to develop and deploy space systems. NASA also plans to apply AI to more than 150 petabytes of data gathered from missions and research programs. The agency said advanced tools could help scientists compare information across instruments and missions, identify previously overlooked patterns and generate new insights about Earth, the solar system and the wider universe.
