Late on the evening of July 9, a dramatic rescue unfolded at Buchans Point Beach, Palm Cove, when a 43-year-old man from Holloways Beach was saved from choppy seas by the Queensland Government’s Rescue 510 helicopter. The man, who had ventured out to go spearfishing at Double Island, was located and rescued approximately 700 meters offshore.

The Queensland Police Service (QPS) reported that the incident began around 8:45 pm when the kayaker attempted to paddle from the beach to Double Island, a journey of about 1.5 kilometers. Despite the efforts of campers at the beach to dissuade him due to the risky conditions, the man launched his two-meter kayak into the sea.

The rescue operation, involving Water Police, officers from Cairns and Smithfield Stations, and the Rescue 510 helicopter, successfully located the kayaker in the early hours of July 10. He was winched to safety and transported to Cairns Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries.

Following this incident, police have issued a warning to locals and tourists alike, urging them to check weather conditions and ensure they are properly equipped before embarking on any maritime activities. The QPS emphasizes the importance of safety and preparation in preventing such dangerous situations.

For those with information on suspicious activities or who wish to report a crime, the QPS encourages contacting Policelink or Crime Stoppers through their respective online platforms or phone numbers.
