The Queensland Police Service (QPS) has intensified its counter-terrorism efforts through comprehensive training exercises statewide, aiming to enhance response capabilities to potential threats. This initiative follows the unsettling events at Bondi Beach in 2025 and Bondi Junction in 2024, underscoring the necessity for continual preparedness.

In 2026, QPS conducted two significant training operations named Sundown and Banshee. These exercises involved multifaceted scenarios including active armed offenders in high-stakes environments such as Suncorp Stadium and various regional retail and entertainment precincts. The training focused on real-time response, crowd control, and threat management, including live hostage scenarios, thereby preparing the officers and partner agencies for effective incident management.

Deputy Commissioner Cheryl Scanlon, overseeing Specialist Operations and chairing the Australia-New Zealand Counter-Terrorism Public Information Sub Committee, emphasized the realism and practicality of these drills. “These scenario-based trainings are crucial for preparing our officers for high-risk events. It’s about readiness to respond swiftly and decisively, ensuring public safety,” Scanlon stated. She highlighted the integration of these exercises into routine operations to continuously test and refine QPS’s response strategies.

The collaborative efforts extend beyond police to stakeholders across various sectors. Angus Nardi, CEO of the Shopping Centre Council of Australia, and Todd Harris, CEO of Stadiums Queensland, both praised the joint exercises. They acknowledged the importance of realistic training settings and strong partnerships with emergency services to enhance emergency response plans and ensure safety during large-scale public events.

As Queensland maintains a ‘PROBABLE’ national terrorism threat level, the community is urged to stay vigilant and cooperate with the ongoing safety measures. QPS continues to advocate for the public to remember and practice the “Escape. Hide. Tell.” protocol during critical situations to aid in a coordinated and effective emergency response.
