In a significant move towards inclusivity and rehabilitation, Olena Zelenska, First Lady of Ukraine, and American philanthropist Howard Buffett inaugurated the first fully barrier-free adaptive sports space, LOKO CHOKOlivka, in Ukraine. This new sports facility, located in the Chokolivka neighborhood of Kyiv, marks a milestone in providing accessible sports and rehabilitation opportunities for veterans, disabled individuals, and children. The LOKO CHOKOlivka sports space, established on the premises of the Lokomotyv basketball club’s sports center and stadium, which was heavily damaged in a 2024 missile strike, is a beacon of hope and recovery for many. The project, funded by the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, aims to cater to a wide range of physical needs, offering specially designed programs for veterans, injured Ukrzaliznytsia employees, individuals with disabilities and amputations, and wheelchair users. During their visit, Zelenska and Buffett observed a basketball training session between Lokomotyv players and wheelchair-using veterans, as well as a football practice session for amputees. They also engaged with participants of Zalizna Zmina, an initiative supporting talented teenagers. According to Zelenska, the facility has already hosted around 80 sports events, including tournaments in football, tennis, basketball, volleyball, and chess. Zelenska praised Buffett’s longstanding commitment to Ukraine, particularly highlighting his contributions during the ongoing conflict with Russia. His support extends beyond sports, including funding for school meal reforms and demining equipment for Ukrainian farmers, demonstrating a holistic approach to aiding the war-stricken nation.
