In a significant crackdown on property-related crimes, the newly formed Tablelands Property Crime Unit has charged 131 individuals with a total of 508 offenses in its first three months of operation. The unit, which includes plainclothes and General Duties officers, focuses on apprehending high-risk property offenders in the region. Since its establishment in February, the unit has been proactive in targeting criminal activities that cause substantial harm to the community. Notable arrests include a 39-year-old woman and a 49-year-old man in Atherton, accused of multiple thefts from a local bottle shop, and two teenagers from Mareeba involved in break-ins and vehicle theft. Detective Acting Inspector Tony Law highlighted the unit’s effectiveness, noting over 500 charges laid as a testament to their dedication. “This team is acting quickly to apprehend offenders and disrupt property crime to minimize harm to the community,” he stated. The success mirrors the results seen with the Cairns Property Crime Unit, reinforcing the strategy of replicating their approach on the Tablelands. The community is encouraged to report any suspicious activities to Policelink or Crime Stoppers. The Queensland Police Service remains committed to ensuring safety and reducing crime through such specialized units, promising continued efforts to protect local communities.
