Ukraine has begun preparations to rebury Andriy Melnyk, a former leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, and his wife, Sofia, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an evening address on May 19, 2026. Zelenskyy said the initiative is part of a broader effort to bring back Ukrainians who fought for the country’s independence and were buried abroad, including in European countries and the United States. He described the reburial of the Melnyks as both an opportunity and a moral responsibility. Preparations are also reportedly underway for possible decisions concerning the reburial of Colonel Yevhen Konovalets and other prominent historical figures. Zelenskyy said the effort was intended to strengthen Ukraine’s historical remembrance and thanked those involved in the process.
