One passenger has died and several others were injured after a bus carrying 29 people rolled onto its side near Gumlu, north of Bowen, Queensland, on Thursday, May 14, Queensland Police said.

Initial investigations indicate the bus was travelling south along the Bruce Highway from Cairns to Airlie Beach at about 4 p.m. when it left the roadway and overturned. The injured passengers were taken to hospitals in Townsville, Ayr and Bowen.

The 70-year-old bus driver, a Mackay man, was transported to Bowen Hospital with minor injuries. The Queensland Police Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the incident and has appealed for witnesses, including anyone with relevant footage.
