In a significant legislative update, the European Parliament is set to finalize the revised Victims’ Rights Directive, which promises enhanced protection and support for victims across the EU. The final vote is scheduled for Thursday, following a detailed press briefing by key MEPs on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at 11:15 CEST in Strasbourg.

The directive, which has been provisionally agreed upon by the Parliament and Council in December 2025, introduces substantial improvements in support and protection measures for victims of crime. This includes a victim-centered approach for assessing individual needs and expanded access to various support services such as emotional support, legal aid, and specialized assistance for victims of sexual violence and vulnerable groups.

Additional features of the updated directive include the establishment of accessible helplines, both online and via the EU-wide phone number 116 006. It also facilitates easier crime reporting, enhances protection for child victims with child-friendly procedures, and ensures access to sexual and reproductive healthcare for survivors of sexual violence. The amendments aim to reinforce victims’ rights throughout criminal proceedings across all member states.

The press conference, to be held at the European Parliament in the Daphne Caruana Galizia press conference room and streamed via the Parliament’s Multimedia Centre website, will be addressed by co-rapporteurs Lucia Yar and Javier Zárzalejos, alongside Lina Gálvez, chair of the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality. Media representatives can attend in person or participate remotely through the Interactio platform.
