Queensland’s State Flying Squad (SFS) has recently concluded a significant operation in Cairns, charging 15 individuals with a total of 40 criminal offenses related to drug activities. This crackdown forms part of an ongoing effort to combat drug-related crimes in the Far North region.

The week-long operation saw SFS personnel collaborating with local police forces and other specialized units, including the dog squad, to carry out six search warrants. These efforts led to the discovery and seizure of substantial quantities of illegal drugs and resulted in several arrests. Among the operations, warrants were executed at properties in Manunda on April 24, and in Brinsmead on April 26, leading to significant drug finds and subsequent charges.

A noteworthy case from the operation involved a 51-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman from Brinsmead, found with over 57 grams of cocaine, valued between $15,000 and $20,000, and more than $1,200 in cash. In another instance in Manunda, authorities discovered 33 cannabis plants weighing over 50kg, nearly 2kg of packaged drugs, and hydroponic growing equipment. The 19-year-old woman faces multiple charges, including 12 counts of supplying dangerous drugs.

Detective Inspector Kevin Goan emphasized the positive impact of such operations on community safety, noting that removing large quantities of drugs from the streets helps reduce harm and prevent broader criminal activities. The operations not only focus on immediate arrests but also aim to disrupt the drug supply chain within the community.

The SFS plans to continue its proactive deployments across Queensland to bolster local law enforcement capabilities and enhance public safety. This ongoing commitment underscores the importance of integrated law enforcement efforts in maintaining community security and deterring drug-related offenses.
