Ukraine’s journey towards European Union membership is gaining momentum, with political barriers now removed and negotiations anticipated to commence soon. This development was highlighted by Ihor Zhovkva, Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, during a meeting with the Ukrainian–Austrian interparliamentary group, chaired by Henrike Brandstötter. Zhovkva expressed his gratitude towards the Austrian Parliament for its unwavering support, which includes a substantial financial package of EUR 90 billion and the latest round of sanctions against Russia. He emphasized that the next significant steps include opening negotiation clusters in the upcoming months, with a potential political decision on full EU membership expected in 2027, contingent upon Ukraine meeting all necessary requirements. The discussions also touched upon efforts to achieve a dignified peace and address the issue of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia, with Austria playing a key role in the ‘Bring Kids Back UA’ initiative. This program, along with others focused on recovery and psychological rehabilitation, showcases Austria’s active involvement in supporting Ukraine during these challenging times.
