Gold Coast police have intensified traffic safety measures during the Easter and school holiday period. The operations, named Operation Yankee Easter Break, targeted drink driving and dangerous driving behaviors across several locations including Broadbeach, Merrimac, and Surfers Paradise.

The operations resulted in 1,095 roadside breath tests (RBTs), leading to charges against three individuals for offenses including drink driving and driving without a license. Additionally, fourteen traffic infringement notices were issued, with one notably for speeding over 40km/h above the legal limit. Superintendent Brett Jackson emphasized the importance of these high-visibility operations in preventing potential tragedies and deterring irresponsible driving behaviors.

Over the course of these operations, police apprehended a man in Surfers Paradise on outstanding warrants, including armed robbery. Another segment of the operation carried out in Merrimac, Gaven, and Labrador involved 640 RBTs, identifying several drink drivers and unlicensed drivers. Among those, a driver was found to be driving at more than three times the legal alcohol limit.

Superintendent Jackson added that with the resumption of school, additional caution is required in school zones. He reminded drivers to adhere to speed limits and remain vigilant to ensure the safety of children. The high-visibility operations and ongoing enforcement efforts by the Gold Coast police serve as a stern reminder to the public about the serious consequences of irresponsible driving.
