In a significant move amidst geopolitical tensions, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has enacted new sanctions targeted at Russian sports figures and organizations accused of propagating pro-Russian aggression narratives. The decree, which was signed on January 17, 2026, follows a decision by Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council.

The sanctions list includes three individuals and two legal entities deeply integrated into the Russian sports world. Among those sanctioned are a well-known Russian boxer and fighter vocal in their support for Russia’s actions against Ukraine, as well as the Russian Paralympic Committee and its president, and the Russian eSports Federation alongside its leader. These entities and individuals are charged with using their platforms to disseminate anti-Ukrainian sentiments and justify Russian military actions.

This strategic move comes as a prelude to the 2026 Winter Olympic Games, signaling Ukraine’s stance that the realm of sports is not isolated from political realities. The sanctioned parties are accused of endorsing Russian military aggression, occupation, and associated war crimes, actions which Ukraine asserts contravene the foundational principles of the Olympic movement.

President Zelenskyy emphasized the ongoing efforts to align Ukraine’s sanctions with those of international partners, ensuring a coordinated global response. “I approved the next sanctions measures as well—decisions will follow shortly. Pressure on Russia must be maintained, and we will continue working on the synchronization of sanctions,” stated Zelenskyy. He highlighted that a considerable portion of personal and entity sanctions globally are influenced by Ukrainian proposals, underscoring the country’s proactive role in the international arena against Russian aggression.
