Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine, has announced continuing efforts to resume prisoner exchanges with Russia, emphasizing diplomacy at the outset of the new year. In his address, Zelenskyy highlighted the importance of international support for Ukraine’s defense and the ongoing negotiations for peace and security.

The Ukrainian government is actively seeking to restart the prisoner swaps that had slowed down by the end of the previous year. These negotiations are part of broader diplomatic talks involving Türkiye, with key meetings being held to facilitate the process. Rustem Umerov, a notable Ukrainian official, has been pivotal in these discussions, meeting with both the Foreign Minister of Türkiye and intelligence officials.

In addition to prisoner exchanges, Ukraine is preparing for several significant meetings aimed at securing peace and enhancing security assurances. On January 3, Ukraine will host a meeting of national security advisors from fifteen countries, including European and NATO representatives, focusing on peace initiatives. This will be followed by a military meeting on January 5 to discuss security guarantees, and a high-level meeting with European leaders on January 6.

President Zelenskyy also expressed gratitude towards international allies, including the new presidency of the Council of the European Union held by Cyprus, emphasizing its support for Ukraine’s EU membership aspirations and security needs. Amid ongoing challenges, including recovery efforts from recent Russian strikes, Ukraine remains resolute in its defense and diplomatic endeavors.
