In a recent initiative termed Operation Xray Surety, the Brisbane police have ramped up efforts to enforce compliance among e-mobility device users. This city-wide operation targets non-compliant e-bikes, e-scooters, and e-motorbikes, focusing on ensuring that these devices meet the required safety and registration standards.

During the first week of this operation, police actions have been widespread, from the riverside areas in the inner city to regional spots like Wynnum and Sandgate, as well as suburban streets in Inala and Indooroopilly. The intensified patrols and crackdowns build on ongoing local police engagements, which include educational seminars in schools and prior enforcement actions against dangerous or illegal use of these devices.

As of November 9, the Brisbane police have issued 150 traffic infringement notices (TINs) related to e-mobility devices. Specific incidents include a 59-year-old man from Capalaba who incurred multiple fines for operating an unregistered and uninsured electric motorcycle without a proper license, and similar compliance failures by other individuals throughout the region. This strict enforcement aims to mitigate the risks posed by non-compliant devices to all road and footpath users.

South Brisbane District Inspector Mat Kelly emphasized the importance of compliance, urging device owners and parents to ensure their e-mobility devices adhere to legal standards. Non-compliance, Kelly warned, could lead not just to fines but potentially to the seizure of the non-compliant devices. This operation is part of a broader commitment by the Queensland Police Service to enhance road safety and reduce accidents, aligning with their ongoing campaign against the ‘Fatal Five’ driving behaviors. The initiative underscores that road safety is a shared responsibility, with legal and educational measures playing a crucial role in protecting the community.
