On World Mental Health Day, Olena Zelenska, the First Lady of Ukraine, unveiled a comprehensive national mental health program titled “How Are You?” aimed at providing accessible, friendly, and free mental health support across the country. The announcement was made during her visit to Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv where she engaged with students studying psychology and social work.

The program, in collaboration with various educational institutions, focuses on training specialists urgently needed in Ukraine. Last academic year, the National University of Kyiv graduated hundreds in these fields, and currently hosts thousands of students in related departments. The initiative also includes mandatory empathy workshops for new university students, reinforcing the program’s commitment to widespread mental health education and support.

Further enhancing the program’s reach, Zelenska met with veterans participating in the Peer-to-Peer program, which prepares them to support fellow servicemembers. She advocated for the official recognition of this peer-to-peer approach, emphasizing its importance for professional employment in resilience and rehabilitation centers. The day also featured the “Touches of Support” exhibition and various activities across 20 Ukrainian regions, involving educational institutions and communities in promoting mental health awareness and support. This national effort underscores the critical importance of mental health, especially in times of societal stress.
