A recent police operation in Roma, Queensland, has led to the arrest of a 23-year-old man for a knife-related offence, as part of efforts to tackle alcohol-fuelled violence and weapon crimes in the area’s central business district. The operation, named Operation Guardian Spirit, was conducted in June and involved high visibility patrols and the use of handheld scanners to detect weapons. The police initiative focused on licensed venues along Wyndham Street, where officers carried out 75 wandings and issued two public nuisance tickets. The arrested individual was found carrying a knife at a local hotel and will appear in the Roma Magistrates Court on July 23, charged with possessing a knife in a public place. Acting Senior Sergeant Scott Petrie, Officer in Charge at Roma Police Station, emphasized the operation’s importance following a series of serious assaults in the area. “We have seen firsthand the devastation which can result from someone possessing a knife,” he noted. The operation aimed to deter offending behavior and enhance community safety in Roma’s nightlife district. Under Queensland’s Jack’s Law, police are empowered to perform metal detection operations in designated Safe Night Precincts. The operation also involved collaboration with local business owners and stakeholders to ensure a coordinated approach. For further information or to report suspicious activity, the public is encouraged to contact Policelink or Crime Stoppers.
