In a powerful address at the 3rd International Summit of Cities and Regions in Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for increased cooperation at interregional and intermunicipal levels to achieve a sustainable peace and further Ukraine’s European integration. Emphasizing the importance of local leadership in the peace process, Zelenskyy highlighted the devastation caused by ongoing Russian strikes and the need for effective international sanctions against Russia. The summit, themed “United for Peace and Security,” comes amidst renewed attacks by Russia on Ukrainian cities, where residential buildings and civilian infrastructure have been damaged. Zelenskyy underscored that the war waged by Russia is not just against Ukraine but against life itself, leading to the destruction of normalcy in occupied areas. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to international partners for their support, which has been instrumental in Ukraine’s recovery efforts. The collaboration has resulted in the rebuilding of hundreds of infrastructure facilities and the securing of essential energy equipment. He presented the Golden Heart award to several international figures for their contributions to Ukraine’s sovereignty and humanitarian aid, including representatives from France, Germany, Japan, Austria, Norway, and Estonia. The President reiterated that peace is not solely the responsibility of national politicians, urging mayors and community leaders to play an active role in advocating for peace and security across Europe. He called for unity in applying pressure on Russia to end the war with dignity and establish security guarantees for Ukraine and its neighbors.
