Starlink Internet Services Pte.Ltd. (Starlink) has been formally warned for failing to comply with telco industry rules regarding complaints record-keeping, according to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). An investigation by ACMA revealed that Starlink failed to provide complaints reports within the required timeframes on multiple occasions between October 2023 and July 2024. Telcos with more than 30,000 active services are obligated to submit complaints reports to ACMA no later than 30 days after each quarter. ACMA member Samantha Yorke emphasized the importance of timely and accurate records of telco complaints for monitoring consumer obligations and identifying industry trends. The investigation was initiated when ACMA noted that Starlink’s active services exceeded the 30,000 threshold without the required reporting. Starlink has since provided the outstanding complaint reports and cooperated with ACMA throughout the process. The Telecommunications (Consumer Complaints) Record-Keeping Rules 2018 are fundamental to the telco consumer complaints-handling framework, ensuring fair and effective resolution for consumers. ACMA has started publishing rankings of Australian telcos based on customer complaint handling metrics derived from complaints reports filed under the record-keeping rules. The most recent ranking can be accessed on ACMA’s website. For further details, please contact ACMA Media at 0438 375 776 or [email protected].
