In a recent press release from the European Parliament, MEPs have emphasized the need for Kosovo and Serbia to intensify their efforts towards EU accession reforms. The Parliament highlighted key areas of concern for both nations, urging Kosovo to accelerate EU-related reforms and Serbia to prioritize the rule of law, media freedom, and anti-corruption measures.

During the plenary session, MEPs evaluated the progress made by Kosovo and Serbia in their European Union integration endeavors for the years 2023 and 2024. While acknowledging Kosovo’s advancements in electoral reforms and economic resilience, they emphasized the importance of continued efforts in judicial reforms, media freedom, public administration efficiency, and digitalization of public services for comprehensive progress.

MEPs called for the implementation of the Brussels and Ohrid agreements between Pristina and Belgrade, emphasizing the establishment of the Association/Community of Serb-Majority Municipalities and the need for Serbia to lift its opposition to Kosovo’s membership in regional and international organizations. Additionally, concerns were raised regarding foreign interference and disinformation campaigns targeting Kosovo, urging the government to enhance its capabilities to counter such threats.

On the other hand, Serbia was urged to address internal political dialogue, uphold the rule of law, combat corruption, and work towards a comprehensive normalization agreement with Kosovo. The independence of key institutions, including media regulators, was stressed, along with the necessity for transparent legal proceedings regarding incidents like the Novi Sad train station canopy collapse.

Overall, the reports adopted by the Parliament underscore the importance of sustained efforts by both Kosovo and Serbia to meet the necessary criteria for EU membership, with MEPs emphasizing the merit-based nature of the enlargement process and the positive impact Serbia’s progress could have on the region.
