President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine has recognized the courageous efforts of over 30 media professionals by awarding them state honors on Journalist’s Day. These commendations highlight the journalists’ dedication to reporting the truth amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. Honorees include journalists, hosts, editors, and cameramen who have been at the forefront of covering the war, some of whom have paid the ultimate price for their dedication. Among the award recipients is Reuters cameraman Ivan Lyubysh-Kirdey, who was honored with the Order of Merit, II class, for his resilient coverage of pivotal events in Ukraine, including the Revolution of Dignity and the Russian occupation of Crimea. Lyubysh-Kirdey was severely injured in a missile strike last year and is currently recovering. Photographer and service member Ruslan Hannushchak was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit, III class. Hannushchak documented Russian war crimes before joining the Armed Forces of Ukraine, where he tragically lost his life in action earlier this year. Other notable honorees include journalist Serhii Nuzhnenko and war correspondent Pavlo Zarva, both recognized for their frontline coverage of the conflict. The Order “For Courage,” III class, was bestowed upon Maksym Butkevych, a human rights defender and radio host, who was captured and unlawfully detained by Russian forces. His release last year was a moment of relief amid the ongoing struggle for the safe return of media personnel from captivity. Despite diplomatic efforts, the release of detained journalists remains uncertain, underscored by the tragic death of Viktoriia Roshchyna in captivity. These awards serve as a testament to the bravery and resilience of Ukrainian journalists who risk their lives to bring the truth to the world amidst a backdrop of ongoing conflict and adversity.
