NASA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture have signed an agreement to expand cooperation on Earth observation, geospatial analytics and advanced data technologies aimed at supporting U.S. agriculture. The memorandum is intended to improve agricultural data systems and provide more timely information to farmers, ranchers and policymakers. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins signed the agreement Oct. 24 during NASA’s Inspiration Tour at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The agencies said the arrangement builds on a longstanding partnership involving agricultural research and data sharing. Under the agreement, NASA and USDA may collaborate on agricultural statistics, remote sensing, modeling, geospatial data engineering and large-scale data analysis. The agencies will also examine ways to better integrate Earth observation tools with agricultural applications. Potential uses include improving crop monitoring, acreage and yield estimates, and assessments of drought and other natural hazards. The agencies said the partnership will also support efforts to modernize USDA data systems and develop new technologies for managing agricultural information.
