Stolen Car Incident Injures Officer

A Queensland police officer was injured and two people were charged after an allegedly stolen vehicle struck police cars and the officer in South Mackay on May 24, police said. The officer suffered a foot injury and was taken to hospital.

Police attended an address on Paradise Street at about 10 a.m. after receiving information that a stolen white Toyota RAV4 was there. The male driver allegedly reversed from the driveway, hitting two police vehicles, before striking a constable who had exited one of the cars in an attempt to make an arrest.

The vehicle was later seen in the Paget and Ooralea areas before crashing on the Mackay Ring Road at about 10:20 a.m. The driver, who was the vehicle’s sole occupant, allegedly fled on foot and was arrested on May 25.

Detectives charged the 25-year-old man with multiple offences, including unlawful use of a motor vehicle, endangering a police officer while driving and damaging an emergency vehicle. He is due to appear in Mackay Magistrates Court on May 26. A 20-year-old woman arrested at the Paradise Street scene was charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle and was due to appear in court on May 25. Police said her bail was refused and investigations remain ongoing.
