A 20-year-old man has been charged over an alleged assault and attempted robbery that left a 44-year-old man with serious head injuries at Broadbeach Waters on January 1, Queensland Police said.

Police allege the victim was standing at a bus stop outside a shopping centre on Hooker Boulevard shortly before 6 a.m. when he was approached by a man riding a bicycle. The man allegedly got off the bicycle and struck the victim in the head from behind, causing him to lose consciousness.

Investigators further allege the man searched the victim’s pockets before fleeing in a vehicle. The victim was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital, where he remains in intensive care.

Following an investigation by the Gold Coast Criminal Investigation Branch, a 20-year-old Lismore man was charged with one count each of grievous bodily harm and attempted robbery. He was due to appear at Southport Magistrates Court on January 7.
