The Australian Communications and Media Authority has found Channel Seven Adelaide Pty Ltd breached broadcasting rules concerning privacy and distressing material involving a child. An ACMA investigation found that details shown during a 7 News broadcast may have enabled viewers to identify the child and were likely to cause distress. The regulator concluded there was insufficient public interest to justify airing the material. Although the child was not named and their face was blurred, the broadcast identified the incident’s location and showed the child under a spotlight. Camera footage also revealed details about the child’s physique, mannerisms and school uniform, which ACMA said could have made the child recognisable within the local community. ACMA member Carolyn Lidgerwood said the network failed to exercise due care, particularly after a parent asked filming to stop.
