Ukraine Seeks Sanctions on Missile Makers

Ukraine is urging partner countries to impose sanctions and tighten export controls on more than 100 Russian companies involved in producing ballistic missiles, Ukrainian presidential sanctions adviser Vladyslav Vlasiuk said Aug. 26. He said Kyiv expects new measures to be adopted within the next one or two months.

Vlasiuk and Ukrainian weapons experts presented foreign-made components found in Russian ballistic missiles, including systems used in the RM-48U and Iskander missiles. According to the Ukrainian presidential website, the components originated from the United States, Taiwan, Japan, Germany, Switzerland, China, France and the United Kingdom, and entered Russia through third countries.

Ukraine has shared information with partner governments and manufacturers about imported electronics, chemical substances and machine-tool components used in Russia’s defense industry. Officials said they had identified more than 200 plants and over 1,600 machine tools linked to the production of Russian weapons.

Vlasiuk also called for the identification and sanctioning of Russian scientists and engineers involved in developing missiles, drones, electronic warfare systems, guidance technology and artificial intelligence. He said restricting access to foreign components and production equipment could significantly reduce Russia’s ability to manufacture ballistic weapons. The effort follows President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s instruction to prepare a special sanctions plan targeting Russia’s military industry.
