Queensland police charged 15 people with 22 offences during a three-day traffic operation targeting dangerous driving across the Darling Downs District. The operation, conducted from August 12 to 14 as part of statewide Operation Yankee Interpose, included 546 random breath tests and 15 random drug tests. Five people were charged with drink-driving, four drivers returned positive drug-test results and police issued 63 traffic infringement notices. In Toowoomba on August 14, officers allegedly intercepted a Toyota Yaris travelling at 130km/h in a 50km/h zone on Ruthven Street. The 17-year-old provisional driver allegedly returned a blood alcohol concentration of 0.123 per cent during secondary testing. The driver was charged with drink-driving, issued a notice to appear in the Toowoomba Childrens Court and received a $1,986 fine, eight demerit points and a licence suspension for speeding. Acting Superintendent Kelly Hanlen said the results highlighted the risks posed by speeding and impaired driving. Police said high-visibility and covert traffic operations would continue during Queensland Road Safety Week, which runs from August 17 to 21.
