A 59-year-old man has been charged with arson following a unit fire in Bungalow, Cairns, early Friday morning, Queensland Police said. Several residents were evacuated, while the sole occupant of the unit was taken to Cairns Hospital in stable condition. Emergency services were called to an Allan Street address at about 12:37 a.m. A crime scene was declared, and evacuated residents were provided with overnight accommodation. Detectives from the Cairns Criminal Investigation Branch arrested the man at about noon. He was refused police bail and is due to appear in Cairns Magistrates Court on August 1.
