Queensland police have charged a 56-year-old man after allegedly finding a makeshift flail and scissors during a weapons scan in Cairns’ central business district. Officers from the Cairns City Police Beat stopped the man on Abbott Street at about 9:30 p.m. on July 25 and conducted a scan under Jack’s Law. He was charged with unlawful possession of a Category M weapon and possession of a knife in a public place. The man was issued a notice to appear and is scheduled to face Cairns Magistrates Court on Aug. 12. Queensland Police said Far North officers scanned 12,540 people and found 119 weapons between July 18, 2025, and July 21, 2026. Cairns City Patrol Group Inspector Jamie Horn said police would continue proactive operations to remove unlawful weapons from the city’s streets.
