MEPs Set Out for Global Talks

The European Parliament will send delegations to China, the United States, Finland, Latvia and Egypt from July 20 to 26 to address foreign policy, economic, housing and human rights issues.

Members of the Foreign Affairs Committee will visit Beijing and Shanghai to discuss Russia’s war against Ukraine, human rights, Indo-Pacific security and China’s role in global supply chains. The delegation is also expected to address climate diplomacy, multilateralism and international governance of artificial intelligence, with meetings planned with Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Chinese lawmakers.

In Washington, members of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee will meet U.S. lawmakers and officials from the Treasury, the International Monetary Fund, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Their discussions will focus on global economic and geopolitical developments, the U.S. political agenda, and banking and financial markets.

A parliamentary committee examining the EU housing crisis will travel to Helsinki and Riga to study social housing, sustainable construction and renovation, and the balance between landlords’ and tenants’ rights. Separately, a Human Rights Subcommittee delegation will visit Cairo to discuss civil and political rights, women’s rights, socioeconomic conditions and refugee protection with Egyptian officials, lawmakers, international organizations and civil society representatives.
