During a poignant address to the 33rd Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) held online from Odesa, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a fervent appeal for international support to bolster Ukraine’s air defenses amidst ongoing Russian aggression. The President emphasized the critical need for Patriot interceptors to protect civilian lives against frequent attacks.

President Zelenskyy detailed the dire situations following a recent Russian strike on July 2, which resulted in 30 deaths and approximately 100 injuries. He highlighted the ongoing clearing operations of rubble from residential areas, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced air defense systems to prevent such tragedies. “We need more air defense. It is about protecting lives every single day,” Zelenskyy stated, urging the United States and other global partners to supply the necessary systems.

In addition to military support, Zelenskyy called for increased sanctions pressure on Russia, particularly targeting the oil sector which is crucial for the financing of the war. He advocated for legal measures in Europe that would allow the confiscation and sale of oil transported by Russia’s shadow fleet, cutting off a significant financial vein for the Russian war effort. The President also stressed the importance of continuous international support in securing the release of Ukrainians from Russian captivity, including civilian hostages and three OSCE officials.

The assembly, hosted in The Hague and continuing through July 8, sees participation from over 250 parliamentarians from 54 countries. Zelenskyy’s address comes at a pivotal moment, seeking to rally global political leadership and practical support to navigate Ukraine through its profound challenges.
