In a significant move to honor historical figure Hetman Ivan Mazepa, a meeting was held on July 3, 2026, to discuss the installation of a new monument in central Kyiv. Chaired by Kyrylo Budanov, the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, the assembly included top government officials and cultural representatives. The gathering, attended by figures such as the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk, and Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, focused on the development of public spaces around the planned monument. It is to be positioned at the start of Taras Shevchenko Boulevard, a site with historical resonance as it replaces a former statue of Lenin which was removed in December 2013. The initiative, originally proposed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Constitution Day, aims to not only erect the monument but also to foster broader civic engagement through an architectural design competition and public consultations. The involvement of the National Union of Architects and various governmental bodies ensures a comprehensive approach to this cultural project, reflecting Mazepa’s significant legacy in Ukrainian history.
