Brisbane’s water police are currently intensifying their patrols and checks on the Brisbane River, focusing particularly on charter vessels to ensure compliance with drug and alcohol regulations. This increase in scrutiny comes in preparation for the expected rise in water traffic during the upcoming school holiday period.

During a recent operation conducted in collaboration with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, water police intercepted a charter vessel near New Farm ferry terminal. The vessel’s master, a 57-year-old man from Fortitude Valley, tested positive for drugs. He was issued a Notice to Appear in court and is scheduled to attend the Brisbane Magistrates Court on August 10.

Authorities are urging all vessel operators, both commercial and recreational, to adhere strictly to safety regulations, including maintaining sobriety while operating vessels. The emphasis is on ensuring that all vessels are equipped with necessary safety gear, are seaworthy, and are operated in a safe manner to protect all on board from potential harm.
