In a significant legislative move, the European Parliament’s Public Health Committee endorsed a new strategy on Wednesday to tackle cardiovascular diseases across the EU, focusing heavily on prevention and addressing root causes. This initiative, known as the “Safe Hearts Plan,” is the EU’s first comprehensive approach to combating the continent’s leading cause of death, which claims approximately 1.7 million lives annually. The plan highlights the necessity of combating major risk factors such as smoking, harmful alcohol consumption, and unhealthy diets. It proposes enhanced regulations on tobacco and nicotine products, including newer varieties, and advocates for the extension of advertising bans to cover social media. The importance of balanced diets, like the Mediterranean and Nordic diets, and increased physical activity is also emphasized alongside improved nutritional labeling and assessments of ultra-processed foods. Rapporteur Romana Jerković stated, “Europe has historically concentrated on managing the consequences of cardiovascular diseases rather than preventing them. This report represents a pivotal shift towards prevention, advocating for stringent actions against commercial determinants of health.” The committee’s report received significant support, with 38 votes in favor and aims for full parliamentary approval in the upcoming September session. If successful, this could mark a transformative step in public health policy driven by evidence rather than commercial interests. Post navigation Cyber Sting Nets Predator
