President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine recently convened with Military Ombudsman Olha Reshetylova to discuss ongoing efforts and achievements in safeguarding the rights of Ukrainian servicemembers. The meeting, detailed on the President’s official website, underscored a significant advancement in addressing the grievances and rights of military personnel amid the country’s ongoing conflict. Since its inception four months ago, the Office of the Military Ombudsman has processed over 8,000 complaints, successfully restoring the rights of thousands of servicemembers. A major portion of these complaints pertained to issues related to medical treatment and referrals within the military healthcare system. Discussions during the meeting also highlighted the need for enhanced transparency in monetary allowances and the establishment of unified criteria for recording additional payments. Key topics included the development of infrastructure to protect the rights of foreign nationals and stateless individuals serving in Ukraine’s defense forces. The Office has conducted a comprehensive study and is poised to present proposals aimed at rectifying systemic violations within certain military units. Olha Reshetylova emphasized the importance of open communication and problem-solving between commanders and the Ombudsman’s Office to foster a transparent and cooperative environment. The collaboration extends to the Ministry of Defense and other security sectors, with plans to develop an analytical center to scrutinize the causes of rights violations and aid military decision-making. President Zelenskyy endorsed the initiative to host the first international forum of military ombudsmen in Kyiv, signaling Ukraine’s readiness to share its experiences and innovations in military rights protection on a global stage.
