Ukraine Hails Swedish Defense Aid

In a significant bolstering of Ukraine’s defense capabilities, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a new Swedish support package worth USD 2.7 billion during a joint press conference with the Swedish Prime Minister. This package is set to enhance Ukraine’s military strength significantly, especially in air defense.

During the conference, President Zelenskyy expressed profound gratitude towards Sweden for its steadfast support and commitment, highlighting the inclusion of Swedish fighter jets, Gripens, which are valued at over USD 2 billion of the total aid. These aircraft are expected to be a major boost to Ukraine’s air fleet, with delivery anticipated within the next ten months.

Further strengthening this partnership, Ukraine has also committed to purchasing additional Gripens as part of a broader European support package worth EUR 90 billion over two years, aimed at enhancing the country’s defense mechanisms. President Zelenskyy underscored the importance of such alliances in the face of ongoing aggression and the need for robust defense systems to protect Ukrainian cities and communities.

In addition to military aid, diplomatic and economic ties were also discussed, with Zelenskyy thanking Sweden for supporting Ukraine’s journey towards European Union membership. The discussions also covered the broader security scenario, including the challenges posed by Russian military strategies and the need for a cohesive European defense capability against ballistic threats.
