Leaders Forge Defense Strategies in Yerevan

In a pivotal gathering on May 4, 2026, on the sidelines of the European Political Community Summit in Yerevan, key global leaders convened in what is known as the Washington format meeting. The assembly, prominently featuring President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, was graced by an array of leaders including France’s President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, among others.

The core focus of the discussion was the reinforcement of air defense systems within Europe. Leaders deliberated on enhancing the production of European missile systems and supporting the PURL initiative, aimed at bolstering Europe’s anti-ballistic missile capabilities. “Europe must develop its own capacity to respond to ballistic threats,” emphasized President Zelenskyy. In a significant move prior to the meeting, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced an additional USD 200 million funding towards the PURL initiative, while Mark Rutte reassured the continuity in the provision of anti-ballistic missiles to Ukraine.

The leaders agreed on the necessity for Europe to assert a more pronounced role in global diplomatic arenas. On the military front, President Zelenskyy updated on the substantial Russian military losses and the bolstered position of Ukraine, thanks to its strategic ties with Middle Eastern and Gulf countries. The session concluded with discussions on safeguarding Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and the rapid mobilization of a EUR 90 billion financial aid package from the European Union to prepare for the upcoming winter.
