European Union heads of state and government are gathering in Cyprus for an informal summit on April 23-24, 2026, where they will deliberate on pivotal issues including the EU’s long-term budget and pressing geopolitical challenges.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola is set to address the summit on April 24. The leaders’ discussions are anticipated to focus on the Multiannual Financial Framework for 2028-2034, proposing a €1.78 trillion budget that marks a significant increase from previous proposals. This budget aims to enhance major EU programs without allocating extra funds for administration.

In addition to financial matters, the summit will address the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East, particularly recent developments in Iran and the broader region’s stability. The European Parliament has shown strong support for Ukraine, with President Metsola affirming that Ukraine’s security and freedom are integral to Europe’s future.

The outcomes of this summit are expected to set the course for the EU’s strategic and financial planning, impacting its approach to external conflicts and internal challenges. Following the summit, negotiations will continue to finalize the budget and refine the EU’s stance on critical international issues.
