In a significant move for the Crimean Tatar community, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a decree to formalize the legal status of the Mejlis as the official representative body of the Crimean Tatars. Announced on April 3, 2026, this decree directs the Cabinet of Ministers to urgently address this issue, marking a pivotal step in recognizing and safeguarding the rights of the Crimean Tatar people.

The decree aims to strengthen the representation of the Crimean Tatars by ensuring their right to sustainable development and the preservation of their ethnic, cultural, linguistic, and religious identities. President Zelenskyy emphasized the decree’s importance, stating, “I signed a decree that provides you with more real opportunities to defend our entire state – all of Ukraine and our Crimea – all our people and the Indigenous people, the Crimean Tatar people – our security and your security, our right to live freely on our land.”

Established in 1991, the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people has long served as the only highest authorized representative and executive body of the Crimean Tatars. However, it lacked a formal legal status. With this new decree, the Mejlis will now be able to participate more effectively in the development of state programs and fully represent the interests of the Crimean Tatar people at both national and international levels.
