George Washington University and Georgetown University have officially joined the Global Coalition of Ukrainian Studies. The signing ceremony, held at the Elliott School of International Affairs, was graced by Ukraine’s First Lady, Olena Zelenska. This addition brings the total to seven U.S. universities actively participating in the coalition, with global participation now stretching across 69 educational institutions in 26 countries. During the event, First Lady Zelenska highlighted the critical role of academic institutions in today’s geopolitical landscape, particularly in countering disinformation and preserving the historical truth about Ukraine. “In a time when Russian aggression seeks to distort the truth about Ukraine, the academic community’s commitment to factual education becomes even more significant,” she remarked. Zelenska stressed the importance of Ukrainian studies in fostering a comprehensive understanding of global history, political science, and the tactics used to combat authoritarian misinformation. In addition to her participation in the signing, Zelenska engaged with faculty and students at George Washington University, emphasizing the universal pursuit of truth and knowledge as foundational to societal progress. She also inaugurated the 390th Ukrainian Book Shelf at the Elliott School and met with leaders from the Smithsonian Institution. The Smithsonian has been a fervent supporter of Ukrainian freedom and cultural heritage, especially following the onset of the Russian invasion. The collaboration between the Smithsonian and Ukraine includes educational initiatives and cultural exchanges, such as the introduction of Ukrainian-language materials in Smithsonian museums and a new Ukrainian stamp to commemorate the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, soon to be exhibited at the National Postal Museum.
