In a significant move aimed at enhancing its global presence, Ukraine has initiated a comprehensive strategy to broaden its relations and influence across the African continent. Under the leadership of Lieutenant General Kyrylo Budanov, head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, a pivotal interagency coordination meeting was held to discuss this new direction.

The meeting, which took place on March 25, 2026, saw the participation of key Ukrainian officials including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, along with representatives from the Cabinet of Ministers, the Foreign Intelligence Service, and the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine. These officials were joined by experts specializing in African affairs. The agenda focused on reviewing current interactions with African nations and exploring future prospects for bilateral relations.

During this assembly, several departments presented their strategic visions. Emphasis was placed on the need for Ukraine to play a more active and influential role in Africa. Historically, Ukraine’s engagement in the region had been minimal, but with the new initiative, it aims to position itself as a formidable player on the geopolitical stage. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs outlined a list of priority countries within the Maghreb region and Sub-Saharan Africa. They also pinpointed key international organizations and regional groups whose financial mechanisms could potentially support Ukraine’s ambitions.

The meeting concluded with the approval of a draft action plan, which is set to be reviewed by the Cabinet of Ministers. Once endorsed, relevant ministries and agencies will be tasked with the plan’s implementation, marking a strategic pivot towards significantly boosting Ukraine’s presence and influence in Africa.
