In a recent crackdown on dangerous driving, Moreton Police have handed out a hefty penalty to a young driver caught speeding excessively along the Bruce Highway. The incident occurred late in the evening on February 25, when a mobile speed camera initially detected the offender’s vehicle, a white Volkswagen Golf hatchback, traveling at a dangerous speed of 133km/h near the Bribie Island interchange. The situation escalated shortly thereafter as Moreton North Highway Patrol officers recorded the same car speeding at an alarming 222km/h in the northbound lane at Elimbah. Despite attempts to intercept, the high velocity made it impossible for police to safely engage the driver at the time. Following a series of investigations assisted by tips from the public, police successfully made contact with the driver, a 19-year-old man from Morayfield. He subsequently met with the officers at Reed Street in Glasshouse Mountains where he was issued a traffic infringement notice. The young driver faced a fine of $1919, received eight demerit points, and had his license suspended for six months for exceeding the speed limit by over 40km/h. Additionally, he was fined $1001 for failing to stop his vehicle when required. The Queensland Police emphasized the importance of community assistance in addressing such violations and reiterated their commitment to reducing fatalities and enhancing safety on roads. They continue to urge drivers to adhere strictly to traffic laws, reminding everyone that responsible driving starts with the individual.
