Four Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are set to visit Madrid from February 16-18 to examine Spain’s efforts in combating the illegal streaming of live sports events. This visit aims to understand and possibly integrate Spain’s pioneering legal frameworks into broader EU policies. The delegation, led by Ilhan Kyuchyuk, chair of the Legal Affairs (JURI) Committee, will engage with Spanish national authorities, including representatives from the Ministry of Culture and the Senate. Discussions will focus on the legal and practical measures Spain has implemented to curb piracy of live events, which could serve as a model across the EU. The MEPs’ itinerary also includes meetings with the Spanish police and the National Court to delve into investigative and law enforcement strategies against piracy. Additional discussions with the European Observatory on Infringements of Intellectual Property Rights and stakeholders from sports and broadcasting sectors like LALIGA and the Union of European Football Associations are scheduled. These meetings are part of a broader mission to enhance EU-wide cooperation and effectiveness in fighting live event piracy, safeguarding cultural and economic interests.
