The Queensland Police Service (QPS) recently celebrated the addition of eight new First Year Constables to the Townsville District, following their graduation from the Oxley Police Academy on January 30, 2026. These officers, selected from 79 recruits, are part of the academy’s initial intake for the year.

Assistant Commissioner Virginia Nelson highlighted the importance of these new constables in her welcome speech, emphasizing their expected contributions to community safety and trust. Nelson praised their intensive training and diverse backgrounds, expressing confidence in their abilities to positively impact the community from their very first day on duty.

Chief Superintendent Dean Cavanagh outlined the support system set in place for these newcomers, which includes structured mentoring and operational training with experienced officers. The varied policing environments in Townsville District—from urban centers to remote areas—will provide these officers with a comprehensive exposure to different policing challenges.

Among the new recruits, First Year Constable Scott Rothery shared his personal motivation for joining the force, driven by his previous experience as an emergency medical dispatcher and a desire to make a direct impact on community safety. Rothery, who is also expecting his second child this year, aspires to set a strong example of service, inspired by his father’s military background.

The QPS continues its recruitment drive throughout 2026, with further academy intakes planned at both Oxley and Townsville. This initiative is part of the ongoing efforts to bolster frontline policing across Queensland, ensuring diverse and effective service to the community.
