A recent Eurobarometer survey initiated by the European Parliament reveals a significant increase in security and safety concerns among EU citizens, urging more robust action and unity from the European Union. The survey, conducted across all 27 EU member states, highlights a growing apprehension regarding geopolitical tensions and their impacts on Europe’s future. The data indicates that a majority of Europeans are worried about various global threats, including active conflicts (72%), terrorism (67%), and cyber-attacks (66%). Additionally, concerns about natural disasters exacerbated by climate change and uncontrolled migration are prevalent among 66% and 65% of respondents, respectively. This has resulted in a strong call for EU member states to exhibit greater unity, with 89% of those surveyed advocating for a more cohesive response to these challenges. At the heart of these concerns is a call for a more pronounced and unified EU voice on the global stage. About 86% of participants expressed a desire for the EU to assert stronger influence internationally, and 73% supported the allocation of more EU resources towards tackling these threats. According to the survey, the focus should be on enhancing defense and security, boosting economic competitiveness, and achieving energy independence. In response to these findings, European Parliament President Metsola emphasized the necessity for the EU to act decisively and cohesively, describing Europe as the “strongest shield” against global instability. Meanwhile, the survey also sheds light on domestic issues, with high living costs and economic challenges being predominant concerns for Europeans, alongside a robust support for maintaining fundamental EU values like peace and democracy. The comprehensive survey was carried out by Verian research agency from November 6 to November 30, 2025, involving 26,453 face-to-face and video interviews across multiple member states. This extensive feedback underscores the critical need for enhanced EU action in response to the complex challenges facing the continent today.
