Authorities have charged a 40-year-old Urangan man following a hit-and-run incident that seriously injured two teenage girls in Coolangatta earlier this month. The accused is set to appear in Southport Magistrates Court today facing multiple charges relating to the event. On January 10, just after 7pm, it is alleged that the man was driving a white Mitsubishi Express van along Marine Parade when he struck the 15-year-old girls. The teenagers were riding in the bicycle lane on a DiroDi Rover Pro E-bike. Following the collision, the driver reportedly did not stop to offer help and continued driving, eventually crossing into New South Wales. The charges against the man include dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death or grievous bodily harm while under the influence of an intoxicating substance, failure to remain at the scene and render assistance, and driving without a license. The man voluntarily presented himself at the Coolangatta police station on January 23, which led to his arrest and the subsequent charges. The Queensland Police Service urges anyone with further information about the incident to come forward and assist by contacting Policelink or Crime Stoppers.
