In a landmark operation coordinated by Europol, dubbed Operation Fabryka, law enforcement authorities across the European Union have successfully dismantled 24 industrial-scale laboratories involved in the production of synthetic drugs. This extensive year-long investigation culminated in significant raids across multiple countries including Poland, Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands on January 16, 2026, leading to numerous arrests and the seizure of vast quantities of precursor chemicals. The operation, initiated based on intelligence from the Polish Police’s Drug Crime Unit in Wrocław, targeted a network suspected of importing over 1,000 tonnes of precursors. These chemicals could produce more than 300 tonnes of synthetic drugs such as MDMA, amphetamine, and cathinone. The network’s activities, estimated to generate billions in criminal profits, presented substantial risks to the legal economy by potentially distorting markets and infiltrating legitimate businesses with laundered money. Throughout the operation, spanning from February 2025 to January 2026, authorities engaged in over 20 action days, resulting in 85 arrests and more than 100 searches. The crackdown revealed an elaborate criminal infrastructure involving seven legal companies in Poland that facilitated the import and distribution of these chemicals. The precursors, largely sourced from China and India, were mislabeled during repackaging to ease their distribution to clandestine labs across the EU. The environmental impact of these illegal operations is also significant, with the production process generating over 120,000 liters of toxic waste. This waste poses severe risks to soil and water quality, threatening local ecosystems. Europol has set up a dedicated taskforce to combat the proliferation of synthetic drugs, reflecting the urgency of addressing this escalating threat within the EU. The European Commission’s recent adoption of the EU Action Plan against Drug Trafficking for 2026-2030 further underscores the commitment to tightening controls on precursor chemicals and enhancing public safety across the Union.
