EU Stands Firm with Greenland, Denmark

In a significant show of support, the European Parliament’s leaders have affirmed their strong backing for Greenland and Denmark, reinforcing the principles of multilateralism and international law in the face of external pressures.

On January 14, 2026, the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament adopted a robust statement, emphasizing the strategic importance of the Arctic region’s security and condemning any attempts to undermine the sovereignty of Denmark and Greenland. The statement highlighted the ongoing commitment of the European Union to uphold the rules-based international order, denouncing any efforts that violate international law and the United Nations Charter.

The statement also recalled historical ties and legal agreements, including the 1916 agreement where the United States acknowledged Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland, reinforcing that any external attempts to alter this status are unacceptable. The European Parliament criticized recent statements from the Trump administration regarding Greenland as a stark violation of international norms and a challenge to the territorial integrity of a NATO ally.

Furthermore, the Parliament urged the European Commission and the European Council to provide concrete support to Greenland and Denmark, ensuring compliance with EU principles, international law, and NATO commitments. This call to action underscores the EU’s dedication to enhancing defense capabilities within the region and maintaining strong cooperative ties with Arctic states.
