First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska recently summarized the progress of the “Barrier-Free” initiative and the National Strategy for Creating a Barrier-Free Environment, highlighting the implementation of 25 ongoing projects aimed at enhancing accessibility across various sectors in Ukraine. This initiative, developed in collaboration with ministries, civil society, and international partners, aims to foster an inclusive environment where barriers become opportunities.

Among the notable projects, the Ministry of Health has made significant strides with the “Development of the Rehabilitation System,” which now boasts 358 inpatient and 505 outpatient facilities staffed by 12,000 rehabilitation specialists. The sports sector has also seen improvements with the “Active Parks: Barrier-Free Leisure Locations,” facilitating adaptive sports in 200 clubs across Ukraine, catering to over 85,000 participants.

Legal and educational accessibility efforts have been bolstered through projects like the “Barrier-Free Access to Legal Information for National Minorities” and “Educational Accessibility: Opening New Horizons,” ensuring vital information and educational opportunities are accessible to all, including those with disabilities. Additionally, economic and digital accessibility have been prioritized, with more than 2,900 employers creating barrier-free workplaces and the establishment of “Barrier-Free Administrative Service Centers” in 14 communities.

As Ukraine continues to implement these comprehensive accessibility projects, the impact is evident in the increasing inclusivity and support across the nation, aligning with European standards and improving the quality of life for all Ukrainians.
