Police in Hervey Bay have cracked down on dangerous driving during Operation Xray Afrino, leading to the identification of 29 alleged drug drivers and the detection of a P Plater driving at 143km/h in a 60 zone. The operation, conducted from May 1 to 5, aimed to ensure road safety and good crowd behavior during an annual motoring event in the area. Led by Highway Patrol Maryborough, authorities conducted 1,679 random breath tests, resulting in two positive results, and 142 random drug tests, with 29 positive results. Additionally, police issued 287 Traffic Infringement Notices (TINs) for various offenses, with speeding being a particular concern across the weekend. Several individuals were caught driving well above the speed limit, including a 35-year-old woman who was detected driving a Kawasaki motorcycle at 112km/h in a 60 zone with a child passenger. Various other drivers, including teenagers, were also issued TINs for excessive speeding during the operation. Maryborough Highway Patrol Officer in Charge Sergeant Josh Churchward emphasized the serious consequences of dangerous driving, highlighting the risks of losing a license, vehicle, or even life. He urged drivers to reflect on their responsibility behind the wheel, especially during National Road Safety Week. The Queensland Police Service remains committed to reducing road fatalities by addressing key behaviors such as speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing seatbelts, fatigue, and distraction. Authorities urge all drivers to prioritize road safety and stay informed about staying safe on Queensland roads.
